The dark side of horse racing, Corey versus Ferris Bueller and the word on 007 ...

LETTER OF THE MONTH

Fraser an inspiration

Andrew Fraser's return to society (The Man Who Fell to Earth, November) is a moving story. Although there will be some who say he was lucky not to have been in Singapore and others who find him egocentric, I think most of us can only rejoice that he has found himself and is ready to move forward.

Roberta Jack, Armadale

Racing shame

As the daughter of racing enthusiasts, I understand the thrills of owning a racehorse (My Little Pony, November). But many of the non-winning horses are put to premature deaths. These horses have galloped their hearts out. Throwing them out is callous, wasteful and a social scandal.

Barbara Fraser, Eltham

Punting with lives

My blood ran cold when I read your profile on Costa Rolfe (Watch This Face, November). My ex-husband is a chronic gambler, the type who doesn't think he has a problem. His disease cost him his marriage, good friends and job security. He, too, was a "child prodigy", picking winners for his parents at age six.

Name withheld

In a judge's chambers

As a former Supreme Court judge's associate, I was pleased to see the judge's chamber demystified (Access All Areas, November). I was in awe of the responsibilities Supreme Court judges shouldered. Your article communicated this brilliantly, and reminded readers that judges are human, too.

Christine Melis, Beaumaris

Rated by the locals

Kate Nancarrow's piece on our Most Livable City status (Moments In Time, November) highlights that this rating is produced by non-Melbourne people. Is anyone seriously bothered about the number of phones per 100 people? The time is right for a livability assessment of Melbourne by Melburnians.

Frank Chamberlin,

North Fitzroy

Word is he's Bond

In Inside Information (November) you ask how we should rate Daniel Craig in the Bond hierarchy. I reckon not very high, as he is not even six foot in the first place. You ask "where is his devil-may-care sense of humour?" I would add: and his old Etonian poise?

Maurice Rooney, Sale

Corey's off day

I was horrified to see Corey Worthington compared to Ferris Bueller (Controversial Characters '08, November). They are not even "sort of" similar. Bueller is an intelligent, clever, caring guy, who took a day off school to help his best friend learn how to live a little. Worthington could learn a thing or two from Bueller on how to enjoy life without destroying everyone else's.

Photo oops

The photograph of the Southern Star (November) is stated to have been taken by the Maribyrnong River. I suggest someone check a map, as it is located near Moonee Ponds Creek.

Stephen Collins,

Brunswick

The writer of the letter of the month in the upcoming February issue will win a champagne brunch for six worth $600 at the Lyall Hotel in South Yarra. The prize includes your choice from the menu plus three bottles of Moet and Chandon champagne. This month's winner is Roberta Jack, who will enjoy a spa package at the Lyall Hotel in South Yarra, worth $300.
