The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (PG) A story of an extraordinary friendship between a shy young boy and a small dinosaur-like creature. Based on a novel by Dick King-Smith, it's an "unlikely but friendly hybrid: the Loch Ness monster crossed with Puff The Magic Dragon," according to the Sydney Morning Herald. While it's not a perfect film, it's "for anyone with the faintest memory of once having been a child".

27 Dresses (PG) It's a stylish single girl's worst nightmare: a wardrobe crammed with one-wear-only dresses in taffeta, bouffant tulle and shiny satin in every shade of candy. They're bridesmaid frocks and there are 27 of them, all worn by Grey's Anatomy and Knocked Up star Katherine Heigl in this film, which is set to be a chick-flick favourite of summer. This rom-com is directed by Anne Fletcher.

American Gangster (MA15+) A drama set in Harlem during the 1970s, the new film from Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Gladiator) depicts the dark side of black power. It stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe and is based on Mark Jacobson's 2000 article The Return of Superfly in New York magazine, in which he describes his encounter with the real Frank Lucas as "a whole season of the black Sopranos - old-school division".
