THIS week The Herald has been publishing daily a historic photograph of Maitland, counting down to a special magazine on the city's past, present and future to be published free with The Herald on Monday.

Today's photograph is of High Street, West Maitland, looking east, when the street was used by trams and horse and carts.

Monday's magazine marks Maitland's 60 years as a city, an anniversary it will reach on Wednesday.

It looks at the city's history and at its future as the fastest-growing inland city in NSW with one of the youngest populations in the state.
